Grand Theft Auto 5 has officially cemented its legacy as the best-selling PlayStation title ever across all console generations in the United States.
The milestone was revealed by Circana’s Mat Piscatella, who marked PlayStation’s 30th anniversary in the US (September 9, 2025) by releasing a pair of all-time sales charts. Using Circana’s retail tracking data, Piscatella compiled the top 20 PlayStation games both by total revenue and by units sold, covering the period between January 1995—months before the first PlayStation launched in North America—and July 2025.
Unsurprisingly, Rockstar’s juggernaut takes the number one spot on both lists. According to Take-Two Interactive’s financial report earlier this year, GTA 5 has sold more than 215 million units worldwide as of May 2025, with 5 million of those copies shifting in just three months between February and May.

The Revenue Leaders
On the revenue side, Grand Theft Auto 5 is followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) and Red Dead Redemption 2. Three more Call of Duty blockbusters—Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Black Ops 6, and Black Ops – Cold War—round out the top six. In fact, Call of Duty accounts for 11 of the top 20 best-sellers by revenue, underlining the series’ dominance on the platform.
The rest of the list includes cultural touchstones like Minecraft, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The Unit Movers
The ranking looks slightly different when measuring sheer units sold. Behind Grand Theft Auto 5, the next biggest titles are Minecraft, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) sits in fifth place here, ahead of other CoD hits such as Black Ops 3 and Black Ops – Cold War.
Fan-favorite franchises also appear, including Marvel’s Spider-Man and its sequel Miles Morales, The Last of Us, God of War (2018), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six: Siege.
PlayStation at 30
The PlayStation brand debuted in North America on September 9, 1995, reshaping the video game industry with 3D graphics, CD-based media, and a library of genre-defining games. Now, three decades later, Sony is celebrating with special anniversary events, giveaways, and a limited-edition run of PlayStation 5 hardware and accessories.
The dominance of Grand Theft Auto 5—a game first released in 2013 for PlayStation 3—speaks to its extraordinary staying power, not just as a bestselling title, but as a cultural phenomenon that continues to attract new players across generations of hardware.
With GTA 6 looming on the horizon, it seems fitting that GTA 5 closes out PlayStation’s first 30 years as its undisputed sales champion.
